Thanks for the beautiful photos! I keep wishing that I could see a carder bee in person, but I don't think they've made it to Sonoma County yet - although it sounds like they are pretty close!

What beautiful photos! Do the hairs on the legs also identiy this bee as a boy?

Thanks! Re the hairs on the legs and if this is a gender identification, yes. According native pollinator specialist Robbin Thorp, emeritus professor of entomology at UC Davis: "Yes, the fringes of white hairs, especially on the front and middle legs are characteristic of the male of this species in contrast to the female."

I would have thought at first glance that this was a nasty yellow jacket, but now I will look more closely for the cute hairy legs.
